Position Summary
APC Microbiome Ireland (formerly Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre) was formed in 2003 with funding from Science Foundation Ireland and in conjunction with key industry partners, it represents a seamless collaboration between UCC, Teagasc Moorepark. It is widely recognised that the gut microbiota plays an important role in human health and has become one of the most dynamic, complex and exciting areas of research in both food and pharmaceutical arenas. Over the last decade APC Microbiome Ireland has established itself as one of the leading global centres in gut microbiota research. APC Microbiome Ireland has made several landmark discoveries and has published over 3500 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, generating many journal covers and associated editorials. APC Microbiome Ireland collaborates with over 20 industry partners and employs over 300 individuals, from the scientific PI’s funded by the partner Institutions, the management team, and a dedicated group of research scientists, research assistants and postgraduate students.
UCC is an accredited research organisation and as such can form hosting agreements with third country nationals (and non-EEA nationals) for the purpose of conducting research in the University.
Role:
The advertised position is within APC’s Gut Phageomics Laboratory, consisting of over 20 researchers investigating the role of the gut bacteriophages in health and disease. The Research Assistant will work within this lab as part in one of APC’s core themes “Microbes to Molecules” to investigate the role of bacteriophage in the gut microbiome and in its community structure and assembly. This Research Assistant will each work side-by-side with other members of the team already in place to deliver on tasks outlined in the research plan.
The ideal candidate will have:
- An MSc in microbiology/bacteriophage/microbiome science.
- A highly skilled and adaptable individual with a proven ability to work well within a team.
The role will include and require:
- A skillset of wet-lab biology/microbiology techniques.
- Experience with gut bacteria/anaerobes.
- Experience with antimicrobials and the analysis thereof.
- Experience with bacterial fermentation.
- Experience with investigating the microbiome (e.g. nucleic acid extraction, 16S rRNA sequencing) and the necessary wet-lab skills to do such.
- Strong ability to work to deadlines and display good timekeeping
- Proven ability to conduct independent research.
Post Duration: 1 Year
Salary: €29,275 - €39,158 p.a. (IUA Salary Scale)
